Lamplight of Peace – VE Day 80th Anniversary

A community gathering has been arranged to mark the anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, 8th May at Staffin War Memorial Garden.
The theme for VE Day is ‘Lamplight of Peace’.
The event will begin at 8.30pm, with the Rev. Gary Wilson in attendance. Angus Ross, Ellishadder, will read out the names of those on the Staffin and Culnacnoc war memorials.
An invitation has been accepted by Kilmuir Community Council, as our close neighbours, to join the event. A representative will read the names from the Kilmuir and Kilmaluag war memorials.
At 8.50pm, two burning torches (sourced from the Up Helly Aa Squad, Shetland) will be lit at Staffin House and carried by Lachie Gillies and Stacey Campbell to the Staffin Memorial Garden and used to light the brazier, made specially for the event by Donald Alick Gillies, accompanied by a piper.
We hope you will be able to attend, and if you wish, please bring a torch which can be switched on at 9pm to contribute to the Lamplight of Peace.
